Parson Russell Terrier Club Championship Show 2007

Judge Mr Harold Gay (Malsville)

I was delighted to be invited to judge the club show. As always the club’s hospitality was excellent and I had a thoroughly enjoyable day. The bitches were better in quality than the dogs and the Open Bitch class in particular was “rather nice”. I was disappointed with the condition of some of the animals presented as they were soft in muscle and as working dogs good muscle is needed to ensure they can do a days work. Roadwork would also have helped movement and tightened up some of the loose fronts that were evident in more Parsons than when I last judged. Mouths were generally good with only a few examples missing teeth and a couple with damage. Size particularly in the dogs is getting to the very top end of the scale although most could be spanned and ribs have improved again. Coats were generally good throughout both in texture and amount and skin was lose as it should be. Of course Parsons are historically the original Fox Terrier but it was a bit of a surprise to see some Fox Terrier heads looking up at me today. Reading through the following it will be felt that I have an obsession with front movement; I don’t but the upright shoulders that appear to be creeping in would make it easy to be so.

Winners of the Parson Russell Terrier Club Championship Show 2007

Minor Puppy Dog: 4
1)Roberts & Todd’s Mindlen Rabbit. Good head eye. Pleasing shape. Moved well when settled. Balanced in outline. Sound rear construction with sufficient angulation. Has lots of promise should be an interesting dog. BPIS
2) Chapman’s Foxwarren Teddy Boy. Good shape and outline. Nice head. Front needs to settle. Has drive behind but as yet, obviously, needs to sort out his front movement.
3)Warne’s I’m on Fire. At a gawky stage. Nice rear angulation with some drive behind. Keen eye and expression. .

Puppy Dog: 6
1) Tagg’s Rymshott Uno-Able. Good head eye and ear with a keen expression. Nice set on of tail with good rear quarters. Balanced shape and proportions. On the move positive but very much a puppy that still needs to tighten in front.
2)Wood’s Chadbrook Atariel Ardencote. Did not settle well to the job in hand, but did enough to show his promise. Good shoulder and rear angulation and balanced in outline. Looks deep in rib but spannable.
3) Swift &Parr’s Pacolito Puzzle Monkey. Shape and size were pleasing for the age. Head with promise and a correct set on of tail. However the front is very loose and he has a tendency to swing the front legs in as he moves.

Junior Dog: 5 (1)
1) Richards’ Pacolito Walteezer. Strong head and jaw set on a moderate neck. Good shape and outline. Adequate rear angulation. Sound on the move.
2) Ellis’s Ammanday Attraction Under Blue Roof. Good head, eye and ear. Nice shoulder and front construction. Standing still looked balanced but on the move had a tendency to walk under himself adding an arch to the back line.
3) Hadley & Sollis’s Cleevehill Full Monty. Pleasing size and shape with nice rear angulation. Front movement couldn’t compete with the previous two.

Novice Dog: 1
1) Hughes’ Ruffntuff Camparay. A spannable dog of good shape and size with a most curious but. He was upright in front and straight behind but balanced on the move even though restricted by his construction.

Graduate Dog: 2 (1)
1) Pell’s Olliebark Star Performer. A plain workman like dog that handled well. Good head ear and eye. Good shoulder and rear structure. Did not settle on the move

Post Graduate Dog: 2
1)Walker’s Matsstars Midnight Miracle. Good shape and balanced on the move. Good shoulder and hind angulation. Correct size rib. Head and ear could be better
2) Hall’s Frithgarth Jack Frost. Good angulation with drive behind but yet another let down by the front action as he threw it everywhere.

Limit Dog: 7 (1)
1)Bygate’s Windynook Jeckyl or Hide. A dog that flows beautifully through muzzle to shoulder and beyond. Nicely proportioned and sized animal. Moved with reach and good to look at in profile just a slight over reach from behind RDCC.
2) Highfield’s Bradpole Blanc de Blancs. A well proportioned white of good size. Sound in shoulder and nice rear but just not together on the move.
3) Tagg’s Rymshott Strider. Good sound dog all round but just a little too deep in brisket.

Open Dog: 9 (3)
1)Kearney’s Windynook Wind’em Up at Pacolito. This is a show dog who happens to be well balanced, a good size and shape, looks like a Parson and is well conditioned to boot. DCC & BOS.
2) Hooley’s Holdobur One To Mark at Hoolmark. I liked this dog when I last judged him and still do. Nice shape and size and easily spannable. Moves soundly but without the enthusiasm of one and was showing a tendency to stand very upright.
3) Denby-Gardner’s Olesenstar Vesper Bell at Ammanday. Nice looking dog but a little straight behind which results in a lack of drive.

Veteran Dog: 7 (1)
1) Sacco, Roberts and Murray’s Ch/AmCh. Mindlen Muddler Minnow. Well balanced with the size and shape to do what he is supposed to. Nice head with a good eye. Movement was adequate. BV
2) Moon’s Ch Alne Arctic Fox. Excellent dog of good shape, size & balance. His movement was sound but he gave out the feeling he would rather be doing something else with his Sunday.
3) Ch Ir/Int Ch Kyline Phoenix. An accomplished animal who stands well. Just a little longer in back than the competition.

Minor Puppy Bitch: 2
1) Baker’s Pacolito Phirst Class. A feminine bitch with a good shape. Good angulation behind. Very positive on the move. At the moment a definite prospect.
2) Hooley’s Mindlen Blubottle at Hoolmark. Has the shape, size and balance But very much a Minor still

Puppy Bitch: 7
1) Baker’s Pacolito Phirst Class.
2) Wood’s Ardencote Thumbelina. Sound in structure and a great shape. Pleasing head and eye but just did not show and carry herself as well as one.
3) Swift & Parr’s Pacolito Picture Monkey. Nice enough bitch indeed but still needs time and couldn’t match the enthusiasm and style of the winners.

Junior Bitch: 6 (1)
1) Denby-Gardner’s Ammandy Apparition. Balanced bitch, sound in both front and rear movement. Good head and nice rib.
2) Higgins’ Pacolito Dymanti Prima Dona. Good head and shape. Moved with balance. Showing a little heaviness in shoulder.
3) Hooley’s Rymshott Wizzard Brew at Hoolmark. Pleasing run along from muzzle to right along the body but has a tendency to stand under making the topline rise noticeably to the tail.

Novice Bitch: 3 (1)
1) Wood’s Ardencote Tamanu. Well presented bitch of good size and shape. Well balanced and with excellent muscle. Moved with reach and drive.
2) Collis’s Alncroft Tribute to Riplington. Beautiful size and shape. Spanned nicely and stunning profile but her front lets her down on the move.

Graduate Bitch: 2
1) Bygate’s Pacolito Xquisite at Windynook. Fabulous shape, size and outline. Moves with reach and drive. Firm muscle and sound shoulders. Needs time to mature a little more but her balance is already showing signs of being exceptional. RBCC & RBIS and daughter of the Dog CC.
2) Ellis’ Foxwarren Kizzy Under Blueroof. Smaller size bitch. Spannable rib. A little short in reach and drive.

Post Graduate Bitch: 8
1) Sollis’ Amagical Dream. Feminine with a nice size & shape. Good head & eye. Balanced on the move with a positive drive behind.
2) Philp’s Muhlross Miss Marples. Another “looker” of a Parson. Nice in outline and like one was good in head with a particularly keen eye but could not match her front movement.
3) Samways’ Saucy Nancy Cassacre. Beautifully angulated front and rear but bigger in rib.

Limit Bitch: 9(3)
1) Baker’s Pacolito X Rated Balanced bitch who showed well with good drive behind. Good length of neck correct set on of tail would like a better head.
2) Bygate’s Pacolito Palatial at Windynook. White of good shape and size not as together on the move as one but all the attributes are there
3) Moore’s Moonreapers Polly Garter. Stood well after a tussle with her handler. Shape and size Ok. Rib could be spanned. Rear angulation gave her drive when she settled to the task. Good length of neck.

Open Bitch: 9(1)
1) Bygate’s Ch Cragrats Secret Rock. Excellent bitch; this is a Parson! Showed well and had balance standing & on the move. Superb condition as all from this kennel were and her musculature behind did, at times, make her slightly too arched in loin as she drove away but she always settled quickly. This owner seems to be doing something seriously right, congratulations! BCC & BIS
2) Johnson’s Garsayno Tutti Frutti. Slightly smaller bitch but well put together and all there. Balanced with confident and positive demeanour.
3) Wood’s Ch Ardencote Tamarisk. Well presented and conditioned bitch. Very nice animal with beautiful head and outline but not as settled as the first two on the move.

Veteran Bitch: 6(2)
1) Hooley’s Holobur Material Girl. Feminine bitch of good shape and size. Nice angulation and moved with balance if little enthusiasm.
2) Pell’s Starlight Express at Olliebark Good shape Nice head with good expression would have liked more drive behind.
3) Stark’s Gobannium Midsummer Nights Dream. Spanable bitch of good size. Nicely angulated rear that did not translate into drive behind.

Brace Class: 5(1)
1) White’s Brace
2) Moore’s Brace
3) Samways’ Brace Progeny Class: 5 Baker’s Pacolito Picturesque
